Nelson Specialties Company specializes in SMT and Thru-Hole printed circuit board assembly (SMT = surface mount technology). NSC uses a combination of assembly methods depending on the order quantity and complexity of a printed circuit board assembly. Manual or hand assembly, bench top pick and place assembly (semi-automated), auto pick and place assembly (fully automated) and wave soldering (semi-automated).
The SMT circuit board assembly process involves the following steps: 1) Solder paste is applied to the pads of a plain circuit board using a solder paste stencil printer. 2) The pasted circuit board is placed onto the auto pick and place machine where parts are automatically placed onto the circuit board. Alternatively, the board can be populated using the bench top pick and place system. 3) The SMT circuit board assembly is sent through the reflow oven where the solder paste is baked until it reaches a liquid state. The liquid solder then cools to a solid state securing the device to the pads and creating an electrical connection between the device and the SMT circuit board assembly. 4) The SMT circuit board assembly is put through a cleaning process. 5) Visual inspection is performed. 6) The SMT circuit board assembly is tested if required. 6) The SMT circuit board assembly is packaged and shipped to the customer.
